Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood
Adjustment Disorder (AD) with Depressed Mood is a mild, reactive form of depression that is an emotional reaction to a specific difficult change (e.g. divorce, job loss, foreclosure, etcetera). Affecting an equal number of males and females, this disorder usually lasts only a few months. Symptoms of this condition are the same as those experienced with other clinical depressions and can vary greatly, from mild to severe.
Although symptoms are usually mild they nevertheless are severe enough that they interfere with the person's ability to function normally. Common symptoms include (but are not limited to):
- Sadness
- Emptiness
- Loss of interest and pleasure
- Irritability and anger
- Changes in appetite
- Sleep problems
- Restlessness
- Slow movement and thinking
- Fatigue
- Worthlessness and guilt
- Poor concentration
- Thoughts about death and suicide
