Types of Depression

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious illness that involves a long-term depressed mood state and/or significant loss of interest in activities that were once pleasurable (anhedonia). The daily functioning of individuals suffering from MDD is greatly impaired by severe depression symptoms.

Dysthymia, also known as Chronic Depression, is a continual state of mild or moderate depression lasting two or more years. Symptoms of depression may increase and decrease in their magnitude, with some shorter periods of non-depressed mood. The onset of dysthymia is gradual, and suffers of this condition often have difficulty establishing exactly when the depression began.
Definition of Postpartum Depression (PPD) (Click)
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious condition that occurs after the delivery that requires immediate treatment. The onset of PPD varies between individuals, but most commonly occurs within the first 4 weeks of delivery. Women with no history of depression can suddenly have suicidal thoughts and many other severe symptoms of depression. However, this condition can usually be treated with appropriate counseling and/or medication.
Definition of Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression) (Click)
Bipolar Disorder (also known as Manic-Depression) is characterized by cycles of mania and depression. These cycles can switch gradually or rapidly, and can be catalyzed by stressful life events or with no specific stressor. Both manic and depression cycles can greatly impair functioning. Mania can increase the likelihood of inappropriate or dangerous decisions. Individuals in a manic phase may feel euphoric, grandiose, and invincible. The depressive phase of the cycle also affects reasoning and behavior by causing severe depression symptoms, and can greatly increase the risk of suicide. Medications known as “mood stabilizers” are usually the initial step in treatment. In addition, counseling can help clients process the cognitive, emotional, and social challenges that can affect individuals with Bipolar Disorder.
Definition of Seasonal Depression (SAD) (Click)
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that is associated with seasonal changes. Most commonly, these symptoms begin in the Fall, and continue through the Winter. Moodiness and fatigue are the most common symptoms of this disorder, and can be often treated with counseling, phototherapy (light therapy), and medications.

This form of depression is short-term, and is an emotional reaction to a specific difficult change (e.g. divorce, job loss, foreclosure, etc...). Symptoms of this condition can vary greatly, ranging from mild to severe. Counseling and medication therapy are generally effective in treating Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood.
