Narrative Therapy Treatment:
Narrative therapy asserts that one’s identity is sourced in our definitions of ourselves (or narratives). As we progress through life, external messages are presented as facts, despite their often arbitrary nature or the presence of an underlying motivation by the issuer of the message (even when the issuer is unaware of his/her motivation). Therefore, reevaluating one’s narrative can be very helpful in deciding whether or not to retain these self-definitions.
This emphasis on the source of the message provides a process of externalization or objectification that tends to reduce one’s likelihood of self-blame for the presence of negative messages, and instead encourages questioning of why this message would have been submitted in the first place and what positive message can replace negatives.
