Importantly, sufferers of OCD are generally very self-aware of their behaviors, and the fact that their compulsions are not, in fact, able to reduce the likelihood of a fear from becoming reality. However, in the absence of other ways to reduce their intense anxiety symptoms, it can be very difficult for individuals with OCD to resist the temptation.
The following are just a few examples of some common obsessions and compulsions:
Obsessions
Fear of germs or dirt
Fear of hurting another person
Fear of “evil” or “sinful” thoughts
Fear of mistakes
Fear of death/sickness/injury to self or loved one
Fear of being offensive
Compulsions
Repeated washing of hands/body
Repeated checking (e.g. stoves, locks)
Repeated arranging/rearranging
Repeated cleaning of house
Repeated counting
Repeated certain words or phrases
OCD is believed to be caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors. From a biological perspective, strong evidence has been found correlating very low serotonin levels with OCD. Serotonin is an essential neurotransmitter in the brain that helps neurons (nerve cells) to communicate. There is also evidence that this imbalance can be passed from parents to children. In addition, an infection caused by the Streptococcus bacteria has also been linked to OCD in children. In addition, environmental stressors can promote the development of OCD, such as abuse, illness, death of a loved one, major life transitions, and other major stressors.
Approximately 3.3 million American adults and about 1 million children and adolescents suffer from OCD. Fortunately, OCD generally responds well to treatment.
